Every parent wants the very best for their child. For many children this begins with success in school. One of the best ways for children to become successful is to have good reading skills. Parents should encourage their children to read but not be pushy about it. If you push too hard your child could become uncomfortable. There are many excellent ways that kids can be encouraged to learn to read.

One obvious way to improve your kids reading skills is to read with them. Besides reading you can use rhyming and telling stories to help build language skills which are the cornerstone of reading skills. Children who are able to anticipate rhyming words are well on their way to mastering language. One of the best ways to get children involved in rhyming is through the use of silly poems and songs.

Another way to help kids learn to read is by using books that include small pictures above the words. This can give your child a sense of success in reading. Many of these books are based on popular character that kids love. It is also fun to use picture books without words and allow your child to make up their own story. These books allow children to have fun with reading because there is no pressure to come up with the right word. There is really no wrong way for your child to read these stores but they begin to develop a sense of a beginning, middle, and end to the stories that they tell.

It is important for parents to encourage reading skills in their children whether they are having problems or not. Make frequent trips to the library at let your child pick out their own books. While at your library see if they have programs to help students learn to read. It is also a good idea to look at software programs designed to help children learn to read.

If your child is having a hard time learning to read then you should try the Skip and Daisy Phonics Curriculum. It is a new program but it is phonics based and many teachers are raving about it.

Great tips. Another way to encourage kids to read is to read aloud to them. Even teenagers like it. Or read one chapter aloud, and let the child read the next chapter aloud. Also, if kids see their parents reading, they are more likely to read themselves.

Thanks for the ideas.

Namaste.
