Choosing a Reading Program for Your Children
60
These days it is possible to find many different software programs that claim to help teach your child how to read. The problem is that some are much more effective than others. As parents it is important to evaluate the software so you can purchase the best product for your child. There are several things that you should look at when choosing learn to read software.
There are high quality reading software programs that will include many different progressive lessons. While you want a software program that includes at least fifteen different lessons some of the best programs will have more than fifty. Often these programs will be designed to cover reading levels from preschool to first grade. Most of these programs will include lessons in phonics, interactive activities, and games. Lessons should progress from a basic understanding of the alphabet to letter sounds, simple words, and eventually complete sentences.
The software that you select should be easy for three and four year olds to navigate through. They will usually include an animated guide or narrator that will help them find the activities and give them easy to follow instructions. If the software program will be accessed via the internet you will need a high speed internet connection. You should be able to install the software from a CD or the manufacturer’s website in a couple of minutes.
The best programs will include a website which has a list of FAQs or a searchable knowledge base that can help you if you need. It is also nice if they have a telephone number or e-mail contact so you can get help with general questions or technical problems. Sometimes these programs will include a tutorial or other type of user guide. Read through online review sites if you want to find out which learn to read software programs are most recommended by actual users. One of the programs I liked was the Skip and Daisy Learn To Read Phonics Program.
